How the SSD Price Index is calculated
The RAMList SSD Price Index measures how much solid-state storage costs over time relative to a fixed starting point. On September 1, 2026 the index is set to 100; every later value is that day's price level as a percentage of the baseline. An index of 150 means prices are 50% higher than on the baseline date; 90 means 10% lower.
What we measure. Each day we take the median price per terabyte of new, validated drives in a fixed set of representative segments (capacity × interface × PCIe generation). The median (the middle listing) is used instead of the average so a few unusually cheap or expensive drives can't skew a segment. Used stock, external/portable drives, and records that fail normalization checks are excluded, and spinning hard drives are never counted — this is a solid-state index.
Per-segment rebasing. Each segment's median $/TB is divided by its own baseline value and multiplied by 100, so every segment starts at 100 and the index tracks price change, not price level.
Fixed weights. The headline SSD Price Index combines the segment indices using fixed weights across representative capacity, interface, and generation segments (not listing counts), so a change in how many of each we happen to be tracking cannot move the index on its own. When a segment has no data on a given day its weight is redistributed across the segments present.
